How Long Does It Take to Rip a DVD to MP4

After having my 4K TV I have decided to rip my entire DVD collection and add it to my library. I absolutely love having stuff available at the touch of a button. I have about 500 DVDs (movies and TV show box sets) and was wondering if anyone has done this with a similar size of collection. How long does it take to rip a DVD or 500 hundred DVDs? I'm thinking a couple of months at least.

Best Answer:

The timescale for completing the conversion of 500 DVD discs would be fairly long. A couple of months might be a good estimate if the DVD ripping is done casually in your spare time on an old engine.

Ripping DVD was a time intensive task. Backing up Blu-ray would take much longer. Several hours were probably required to rip a DVD, but now it can be done within 5 to 10 minutes. So what causes such a big difference in timescale for ripping DVD? The answer lies in the factors that decide DVD ripping speed:

1. Read Speed of DVD-ROM Drive

DVD-ROM's read and write speeds affect the DVD ripping speed. Normally, ripping a local ISO image file takes less time than converting a DVD disc in internal DVD drive.

2. USB Transfer Rate

If there is USB 3.0 with higher transfer rate, choose external optical drive with faster read speed instead of using the internal one.

3. DVD Decoding Ability Affects DVD Ripping Speed

How long does it take to decode a DVD? It depends on the software's decoding ability. Freeware and shareware may take about the same amount of time to decrypt a homemade DVD. But even the best free DVD ripper HandBrake cannot decode a commercial copy protected DVD. It took you half an hour or more to scan titles one by one, which only led to analyzing error. WinX DVD Ripper Platinum deals with any encrypted DVDs, even the latest ones.

4. DVD Encoding Speed Decides the Timescale for Ripping a DVD

Re-encoding is the most time-consuming part when ripping a DVD. DVD ripping could be accelerated when using a hardware-accelerated DVD ripper and choosing a hardware-accelerated compatible video codec. Surely more CPU cores, RAM and a specialized video encoding module in graphic cards would speed up the DVD ripping, like NVENC of Nvidia.

For example: how long does it take to rip a DVD to MP4
* the duration of the source DVD is 120 min.
